Pastel Child Portrait titled “We All Have Ghosts”

We All Have Ghosts

As a gift, I was given a new type of pastel called Pan Pastels. What a joy it has been to work with this type of medium.  These pastels are very soft and highly pigmented which lend to an oil painting-like effect. The application is very much like painting with the use of brushes, foam applicators and sponges. With [...]

Pastel Child Portrait titled “Spirited”

Spirited

I am very excited to add the image of this beautiful child, titled Spirited, to  my online portfolio collection. This particular study is created in pastel which, I feel, works well with the overall composition. This was the last commission portrait of the year created for the Christmas holiday. The story behind this young girl’s struggle very early in her life has greatly [...]

My next portrait is based on a representational study of a photograph taken by Judithann, a wonderful photographer and grandmother to this young girl. It has been a pleasure working with such inspiration. The first image posted is the reference photograph by Judithann, used to create the portrait. Once again, I begin with a line drawing using [...]

Colored Pencil Portrait Complete…titled “Her Promise”

Child portrait in colored pencil.

The colored pencil study is complete. The last stage of the portrait is done by reworking color near color in deeper shades. To blend color seamlessly, I use either a colorless pencil or a white colored pencil and repeat the circling technique over the color stain previously done. This gives the portrait an oil painting-like effect. The last [...]

I plan to use colored pencil as the main medium for this portrait. I begin this study lightly creating the basic line work in graphite pencil. This is done with a soft [...]

A Vision in Pastel

A child portrait created in pastel.

This most recent portrait, “Angel in Waiting” is created in pastel. Luck was on my side when I happened across a tiny little face captured by the lens of a camera. The light cast through the child’s hair impressed on my mind, an almost angelic effect. I must say I was graced with having made the acquaintance of [...]
