Graphite Pencil Portrait of Ella

Tuesday, December 13th, 2011

My most recent portrait comes on the tail end of holiday portrait orders. This portrait was requested by a wonderful mother interested in having her daughter’s portrait created in honor of her first birthday. I found that to be such a sweet gift.

She decided on graphite pencil and couldn’t have chosen a more appropriate medium for the image she wanted to portray.

Introducing Ella, in all her beauty and grace…

September 11, 2001 Portrait Remembrance – Speechless

Sunday, September 11th, 2011

Following the Twin Tower tragedy of September 11, 2001, I created a portrait titled, Speechless, to help me come to terms with how I felt inside –  if that was at all possible…

Today, in commemoration of that day ten years ago, I am reposting Speechless in hopes that in some small way my thoughts and prayers will be felt by the family and friends of the lives lost on that day…

Pastel Child Portrait titled “Kissed by the Light”

Monday, September 5th, 2011

I’ve been in correspondence with Nataly, a wonderful mother from Russia, with regards to painting a portrait of her daughter Sophie. After much consideration, we decided I would create a portrait inspired by a photograph taken by photographer, Anastasia Serdukova. This portrait is titled Kissed by the Light.

As Sophie is such a vibrant girl, I felt the best choice of medium would be pastel. Since PanPastel offers a strong painterly effect, I opted to use this type of pastel for the portrait as I wished for bold, bright color and light - a representation, I felt, worked best in Sophie’s likeness.

Thank you Anastasia and Nataly. Most of all thank you Sophie for influencing this piece with your lively personality and beauty.

Pastel Child Portrait titled “Black Tie Affair”

Thursday, April 14th, 2011

Over the past month I have been working, once again, with a fairly new type of pastel called PanPastels. The medium is a joy to work with.

This is a formal portrait of Zachary titled, Black Tie Affair. He is most often on the move and would rather not waste a moment to have his photograph taken. This portrait captures him in his holiday attire, looking like a little man.

Pastel Portrait titled “Sound of Music”

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

I recently completed a portrait of an amazing young girl called Maya, titled Sound of Music. By her mother’s description, Maya has overcome many challenges in her twleve years, all the while exuding an incredible sense of humor and beaming this contagious smile!

I thank Maya’s aunt, photographer Lisa Tricoli for inspiring me through her photographic work. I thank Maya’s mother for allowing me to create such a beautiful likeness of her child. Most of all, I thank Maya for influencing this piece through her beauty and joyful spirit…

Pastel Child Portrait titled “We All Have Ghosts”

Friday, May 14th, 2010

As a gift, I was given a new type of pastel called Pan Pastels. What a joy it has been to work with this type of medium.  These pastels are very soft and highly pigmented which lend to an oil painting-like effect. The application is very much like painting with the use of brushes, foam applicators and sponges.

With a sincere thank you to Robert Provost and his son, the introduction to my first portrait completed in Pan Pastels titled, We All Have Ghosts below.

Pastel Child Portrait titled “Spirited”

Monday, December 28th, 2009

I am very excited to add the image of this beautiful child, titled Spirited, to  my online portfolio collection. This particular study is created in pastel which, I feel, works well with the overall composition. This was the last commission portrait of the year created for the Christmas holiday.

The story behind this young girl’s struggle very early in her life has greatly inspired the process of this piece, as did the influence and devotion of her mother, Nicole…
